 "Screen is too bright!" 2009-12-15
By AnnN (PA)
I decided to return this monitor for a few reasons. Mainly because the screen was too bright and hurt my eyes. My daughter totally agreed. I even went into the settings and lowered the brightness and contrast down to zero. That made it bearable, but the clarity and colors suffered some because of it. (I know, I know, one would think that zero would be an all dark screen but not so with this monitor!) I don't know if it was just the monitor I got or if all of them are that way. I did notice others saying that their screens were bright.

Also, I hated the controls and they were very frustrating to figure out. It did not come with any instructions at all which I thought was strange.

And last of all, it was a 1440 x 900 and I could not find a decent setting that would work for me. I like to change the size so the text is easier to read. But this monitor could not handle a larger setting, the letters were half gray and smeared making it too difficult to even read.

When I returned this monitor I thought about trying another Acer, hoping that the brightness and controls may be different. I decided to go to Staples and look at the 20" Acer that was on sale there, but when I got there I saw that it had a glare screen. That would never work for me because I have windows in the room. But while I was there I decided to get their Dell 20" monitor and I LOVE it! It is a 1600 x 900 and can handle a larger setting just fine.

Have an Acer laptop so was familiar with the name. Since I had the VERY OLD FASHIONED 15" monitor, this was very different for me. I can lift it with one hand. The best thing that I can say is the monitor performs as advertised. That means my money was well spent and I'm very satisfied with the product. I'd buy another Acer product and use Amazon again.

Device does not reliably switch between computers, which requires a reset of a computer occassionally.

Not a long review but: It works as advertised and the price was great IMO. I had a challenge today with it auto-changing PCs when using virtual machines, but I have found if you maximize your VM view (full screen) it stops doing that. Switching is easy. Setup was easy. 1st of all I would like to add that I am not using the video portion of the switch. As my monitor has two inputs for DVI, all I wanted was the USB without the DVI cost.

I have a DELL laptop in a docking station on one end, and my home built pc on the other. Both work very well with the touch button on the unit. I couldn't have asked for a cheaper solution to having two keyboards and two mice on my desk. Great product.

"It's like Garmin didn't test the design..." 2009-12-14
By ATXMarathonRunner (Austin, TX)
I just returned my 405 - I tried very hard to like this, but in the end, it was just way too expensive for all the issues I had using it. I'm surprised by the four star rating it currently has on Amazon.

I have used a Forerunner 305 for over two years now (which I absolutely love) and thought that the 405 would be a nice upgrade. Smaller, better GPS, newer technology, etc. But the problem is that Garmin added the now infamous "touch bezel". It is not necesarily that the bezel is too sensitive, just that it reacts everytime it touches something. For instance, when you touch your leg mid-run to tie a shoe, scratch an itch, pull up a sock, etc. When the weather turned cold, I discovered that the special running material on my running jacket sets the bezel off. My running buddies that have the 405 actually wear the watch OVER their jacket! 75% of the time I look down at the watch it is on some random screen. You can lock the bezel so the screen won't change, but to do this you have to press the start/stop and lap/reset buttons at the same time - so then you end up stopping the watch half the time. What a mess.

THe people I know that do use a 405 don't have anything nice to say about it. They use it because they've already paid for it and it does the most important thing, which is track distance.

I have no idea why Garmin decided to go with the bezel design, but it seriously seems like no one there ever really put it through its paces. I did really like the improved GPS reception and the brighter backlight, but that was about all. Hopefully the next model will just use regular old buttons or I may have to move on to a different brand.

A summary of my pros/cons over the previous model if you are still considering buying this:

Pros:

-Improved GPS and form factor

-Backlight is really bright

-Software seems improved

Cons:

-Touch bezel causes random screens to appear - too sensitive, can't wear with cold weather gear

-Bezel locking button combo causes you to inadvertently stop the watch or move to a new lap

-Data screens only hold max of 3 fields instead of 4

-You can only scroll through your workout screens in one direction - eg, you need to cycle through all screens to get the one prior to the one you are looking at.

Bottom line: Either buy a 205/305 or wait for the model after the 405 and pray it doesn't have a touch bezel.

"Best training money ever spent" 2009-12-14
By E. Boyer (Buffalo, NY)
I have now owned and used this tool for 3 months in all weather conditions but desert. I am not going to go through a long list of features because there are other reviews that cover that. Why I am writing is to help others with my experiences with the unit.

The Bezel is the second biggest problem with this device. I am not sure if it is sweat, touch, rain, etc. Sometimes it is just plain old wonky. That being said it is a minor frustration occasionally and the wealth of information that this device provides for the money more than makes up for it.

The software is bad, if it weren't for the fact that it works I would say it is worse than the Polar software. I have had numerous glitches with Polar software over the 8 years of using their devices and while it has more information it is far from user friendly. This isn't a review/bash of Polar just a point of comparison. The Garmin Software is not very configurable, and being web-based is always a mixed blessing. These two companies obviously aren't software companies. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are numerous software packages out there that will allow you to get around Garmin's data tracking offerings. Several are free or donationware, Sport Traks is the one I am using.

To round out the negatives I have 2 minor complaints. The watchband(sigh), at least they gave use the pieces to switch it to the supplied Velcro bands, which work nicely and fit around my winter gear. The last negative is the only feature I wish this device had, temperature.

Negatives aside, the pluses far out-weigh them. Using this device to check your pacing makes training and racing smarter. You have several configurable pacing options. The two I use most is lap pace and current pace. Lap pace gives you a pace over your current lap, which makes it a reasonably stable metric. Current pace gives you your pace at the moment, it bounces around a bit, particularly after you take a turn. Use these two together and you can modify your pace all day long.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned before but the displays are VERY configurable. You can turn on or off display windows so you don't have to scroll trough them if they are unnecessary to you. Each window is completely configurable. There are three data fields in each window and you can select which metric you wish each to display. If you wanted you could have all the fields display the same information---I'm not sure why anyone would want to do this, but that is how flexible the display is.

I am looking forward to Spring when I break out my road bike and strap this device on it.

Would I recommend this device? You bet, after three months use I am very pleased and will be buying one for my wife.

Ok, Ok, one more complaint. Why only one color and this color to boot? I am sure it was chosen as gender neutral, but it still strikes me as a bit on the feminine side.

"Superb - everything I had wished for" 2009-12-14
By Tal Sela
I've only had this watch for a week, but I'm so super impressed with it that I decided to write a review after just one run (10m/16k) and a few hours of 'playing around'. I must start by saying that this product, in contrast to what some reviewers had to say here, is super user-friendly. I have probably used, or at least gone over all of the functions it has to offer, and I did not even open the instruction manual once. If you know your way with gadgets, there is no reason why this shouldn't be a piece of cake for you.

I'm a marathon runner, and have used Polar RS200SD (with a foot pod) until I decided to step up to this little wonder. I didn't want to settle for a watch that can show 32.12 or 33.96 for the same 33km run on different occasions - I wanted one I could rely on for turning around on my long runs. Foot-pods just do not do that. The 405CX's GPS features are amazing - satellites are found in a matter of seconds, and throughout my run, I had 4m (12ft) accuracy. Even in my home I get 6-8m (18-24ft) accuracy. I ran 16km and turned around at the place I know is exactly 8km from the starting point. The Garmin showed 8.01, and by the time I was back it was 16.01.

The display is clear enough, and allows you to set up to 3 screens with 3 data-items each (choose from over 30, i.e. Speed, Avg-Speed, LastLap-Speed etc.), in addition to the HR screen (which is also configurable). The VP is very helpful if you're trying to keep a steady pace, and allows you to always be aware of how you're doing in comparison to the pace you desired. This is something I wish I had in my previous competitions.

Connection to the computer couldn't be easier, and I'm so happy to say goodbye to those stupid Polar 'SonicLink' sounds that belong to modems somewhere back in the early 90's. One of the best things about data transfer is that Garmin (unlike Polar) do not keep their data secret, meaning I can use any software I want in order to analyze my runs, and not have to settle on some stripped-down online tool, which does not even allow me to export its data in a format other than XML (Polar, again).

I could not be more satisfied with this watch. It isn't cheap, but if you're a runner who wants to know exactly where you are on your run, and be confident that the speed the watch is showing is correct - this is the way to go.

Way to go Garmin - You've earned an enthusiastic new fan!

 "All that I expected" 2009-11-30
By Bryan O. Hughes (San Jose, CA United States)
After reading through the other reviews here, I had a good sense of what to expect (and what not to). The watch's UI isn't the most intuitive, but after 15 minutes or so, it made sense. My first run was great; although a little bulky, the 405 is very light and comfortable. The real surprise came when I paired it with my Mac though...wow, what a great example of hardware and software designed under the same roof...very, very nice. The only real criticism that I have on that end is distinguishing between [...] and Garmin Connect (where you get your dashboard and all data)...but that's pretty minor. Facebook upload felt pretty clunky, but that's honestly frosting anyway. As you'll read elsewhere, sweat and the touch interface aren't friends...and to that end I'd lock the bezel. All in all, I could not be more pleased.

"I like it except for the blurry text" 2009-12-15

This is a great monitor for the price. It had everything that I was looking for. I am useing this as a clone for when my HDTV is being used for TV watching. Or I can use this as a master screen when showing pictures or movies to family.

The only issue I have is the text. Even at the native resolution and after calibrating ClearType it was no better. Maybe I should turn it off?

I think the text was clearer thru VGA rather than HDMI. Switching back is not an option though.

 "Very Pleased" 2009-12-12
By Adam (Philadelphia, PA)
I recently purchased this monitor from Amazon.com.

The monitor arrived quickly and in flawless condition.

The monitor was pretty simple to setup. It arrives with all the requisit cabling. When I plugged it up, it was working right off the bat. I installed the driver for the monitor just to be safe, but I didn't immediately notice any huge difference - note, I hadn't used it much prior to installing the driver software.

With the monitor about 18" away from my face, I can see everything perfectly while seated back in my chair - a first. This monitor replaces two 17" Sony Trinitron monitors. With the new monitor (I bought two), my desk doesn't feel anywhere as cluttered as it did before. The colors, brightness, and clarity is flawless. I read an article about Tiger Woods this morning, which had a picture of him on the course. I was absolutely amazed how clear and flawless the picture looked. The colors were bright and vibrant and the detail was beyond words - I could make out the imperfections on Tiger's face. The screen is wide enough that I can have a few windows open comfortably. I am an amature photographer. The size makes working on photos much easier, and the monitor does a magnificant job of accurately displaying shots taken with my dSLR camera.

Overall I thought this was a tremendous deal. I've placed an order for a third monitor for my son's computer. If that doesn't speak to how much I like it, I don't know what else does.

I was completely blown away by the visuals of this monitor, but especially by the cool built-in speakers. Be prepared to toss your fancy speakers from Logitech, Bose, etc. - or whatever you may have, because they're that good! In fact, I've found the speakers are so much more able than anything else out there, I tend to dim the monitor and just focus on the crystalline sound emanating from them. It's like a drug. Whether you're into rap, R & B, soul, disco or whatever, if you're an audiophile, you're going to really get a kick out of these.

I purchased two of these monitors for my computer build to use in a dual screen setup. They arrived packaged very well, with no dead pixels.  "A must have for watching movies & playing games" 2009-12-01
By Mike C. (Florida)
After years of using an Acer 17-inch full screen monitor with a max resolution of 1280x1024 and a VGA connection, I decided that it was time to upgrade. Seeing as how my 17-inch Acer monitor kept going strong after 5 years, I decided to go with another Acer monitor. And I was not disappointed at all.

With a resolution of up to 1680x1050, this monitor allowed me to watch movies in widescreen, and with the digital video interface connector (DVI-D), the picture was even more clear and crisp. I have had no problems with this monitor, and Acer definitely stands behind their products. My gaming experience has been a pleasure and, with the monitor running on its native resolution, I have no problems reading the text on the screen.

I highly recommend this monitor to anybody who's thinking of upgrading. I'm sure that in about 5 years or so, I will get an even bigger monitor, but, for the time being, this will definitely keep me satisfied.

"The last reason to own a floor-standing PC has just left the room" 2009-11-21
By John Mulvihill (San Francisco Bay Area)
Until recently there were still reasons to own a general-purpose PC in floor-standing rather than laptop configuration: You could swap video cards to enhance canvas size and image quality; you could have quick access to a LAN; you could install extra fans to keep the whole thing from going postal; you could have room on your desk for a photo of Mom.

There were plenty more reasons "power users" remained loyal to the mainframe paradigm. Without even acknowledging the Freudian "size" discrepancy, pre-Y2K laptops demanded every sort of compromise on the user's part. They were slow, they had lousy keyboards and screens, and they were not even very portable. In the old days, a systems operator worth his Fortran wouldn't trade his hornrims on an original Compaq.

But now, to coin a metaphor, the shoe is on the other foot. Today's laptops sport duo-core processors and multi-gig RAM-paks that make short work of everyday office computing. And if you want an auxiliary display that's as big as the one that came with your 10-year-old's gaming system, you can have that, too. Virtually all laptops have external-display ports. If you choose wisely, your second display can perform as well as your laptop without exceeding its cost.

I remember the days when, to get anywhere near the image size, resolution, and quality this Acer provides, I'd have to add an additional zero to the price tag. That's no exaggeration, folks! Those of us old enough to remember, think back to CAD workstations and Sony 21" CRTs.

After six years of abuse, my Toshiba M15 laptop has consistently refused to break down, and it wasn't until Windows 7 came along that I had an excuse to replace it. (Windows 7 wants more RAM than the old laptops could deliver.) Though my new Toshiba P500 comes with a brilliant 18.4" display, my dub-sized V223 makes the Toshi's screen seem almost inadequate.

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6995 - Core 2 Duo P7450 / 2.13 GHz - RAM 6 GB - HDD 500 GB - DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - GF GT 230M TurboCache - IEEE 802.11n - WLAN : 802.11b/g/n - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit - 16" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) TruBrite -...

Since computer displays are the user's eyes in the virtual world, there can almost be no such thing as too many of them, or too much. The tradition of one display per computer is nothing more than tradition. So is the notion that a "serious" PC must weigh 20 lb. and sit on the floor.

It's time to, as Apple used to say, think different. A good starting point would be an Acer V223. Or two.

"One of the best purchases of my life" 2009-12-14
By Andrey (Boston, MA)
I use these headphones for DJing and let me tell you, the amount of detail and the clarity of the sound are exceptional! I paid $80 for these 2 years ago, can't believe they are $15 cheaper now - such a steal! The pads are starting to wear out (STARTING!), but otherwise the headphones are amazing. They are not very comfortable for long periods of time since the pads are kind of small, but I have not had any headphones which were comfortable to wear for over 2 hours.

Noise isolation is very good for everyday use (can't hear people talking to me), but so-so for loud environments (clubs, etc.)

Can also be modded with Beyer Dynamic DT 250 pads. I love the fact that they fold and I can put them in the little bag they come with, throw in the backpack and not have wires everywhere.

These are the same as 7506, which are selling for... $100??

These are the headphones that I recommend to anyone and everyone (hey, sound pros in studios and big-name DJs like Sasha & John Digweed use these as well, that must say something, right?)

 "Excellent!" 2009-12-07

These are excellent and HUGE step up from the SONY MDR-V600! The sound isolation is good and the headphones bring new life into your existing music collection. You'll hear sounds you've never heard before.

I also have the Grado SR60, and those are very good open-ear phones. These are just as good in terms of sound quality. They are also a significant step up from my previous SONY MDR-V600 (which I didn't like and the foam deteriorated quickly).

I highly recommend it. As usual, Amazon delivery was quick and arrived before my trip.

"The Next Dimension of Audio" 2009-12-04
By Ken Hada (Thousand Oaks, CA)
I won't even say how great the sound quality is, the other reviews have covered that extensively. Bottom line is the sound quality is incredible. Much better than my portable Shure SE530 earphones. Compared to my friends Beats by Dre, these are just as "open" sounding regarding the soundstage. I would say the treble is much more crisp and refined, but not sharp. The bass is tighter and deeper, but overall less powerful. If you enjoy extremely high levels of bass, to the point where it muddies the other frequencies, either get a FAT amplifier and run full bass on the EQ, or buy different headphones...you don't deserve this amazing quality!

Comfort was the only thing worth noting here. The original earpads have gotten a bunch of criticism in the reviews.

When I received these headphones, I did a 10 hour burn in. When i first listened to them, they sounded average. I went online and downloaded files specifically designed for headphone break-in (white noise, pink noise, frequency range sweeps, etc.). Needless to say, after the break in the headphones rose to their true potential.

THOSE WHO DOUBT THE LEGITIMACY OF HEADPHONE BREAK-IN SHOULD READ UP! IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ENJOY ACCURATE SOUND REPRODUCTION.

The earpads were somewhat disappointing, they seemed like some really (too) soft foam wrapped in material with the consistency of a garbage bag but thinner. It was sad and seemed very prone to tearing. It was not uncomfortable for me however, after wearing them for 2 hours or so. No sweat, ache, etc.

Despite no complaints I still decided to purchase the aftermarket beyerdynamic earpads. And wow what a difference. Bass is deeper, sound isolation improved, makes the headphones feel lighter, and much more comfortable. The material that covers the foam is excellent. I wouldn't have expected less, these new earpads are German made, the same nation that is renowned for making excellent earplugs so you can sleep on airplanes!

They cost me less than 20 dollars, and considering how long you will keep these headphones (did i mention they sound great?) it would be a wise-investment to give your ears a lounge while they are absorbing the great sounds emitted from the drivers.

DONT SECOND GUESS YOURSELF! BUY THESE HEADPHONES! $65 is a steal!

"Poor SNR, Poor Sound, Sweaty" 2009-12-03
By Kyle Getz
-1 star for the poor signal-to-noise ratio. I plugged these guys into a couple laptops and I immediately heard a very noticable hissing noise. I still heard the hissing even after I started to play some music. I plugged in my old Sony street-style headphones and heard no hissing.

-1 star for the poor sound. It sounds like the engineers really went with a U-shape on the equalizer - the low-end and high-end frequencies are way too high. There's too much bass to the point that it's uncomfortable (and this is coming from someone who loves bass and subwoofers) and the high-end frequencies are so high the music sounds tinny. Again, I plugged in my old Sony street-style headphones and the music sounded normal again.

-1 star for the comfort. Maybe I'm not a fan of leatherette over-the-ear headphones in general, but these headphones made me ears sweaty within a few minutes.

+1 star for the design - it feels pretty solid and folds up nicely for transporting.

All in all, I can't believe these headphones have received so many glowing reviews - I think they stink.
